Yerba maté (Ilex paraguariensis) has been consumed for centuries in South America, with its use originating among Indigenous peoples, particularly the Guaraní, before becoming an important part of everyday culture throughout countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil.
Traditionally, yerba maté is prepared in a gourd and sipped through a filtered straw called a bombilla. Sharing maté has also developed into an important social ritual centered around hospitality, conversation, and community.
Yerba maté naturally contains caffeine along with other naturally occurring plant compounds, including polyphenols and methylxanthines such as theobromine. Its stimulating qualities have traditionally made maté a beverage associated with energy, alertness, stamina, and sustained activity. Modern research has also investigated yerba maté and its naturally occurring compounds in areas including antioxidant activity, metabolism, cardiovascular health, and glucose and lipid metabolism. Research continues, and drinking maté should not be considered a treatment for any health condition.
Java Maté takes this longstanding South American beverage tradition in a different direction, combining roasted yerba maté with black tea, chocolate, and warming flavors to create a bold, coffee-inspired brew. Because Java Maté also contains black tea, we recommend preparing it as a traditionally steeped loose-leaf tea rather than repeatedly infusing it in a maté gourd, which can over-extract the black tea.
